Hand Engraving

Hand engraving is done with a tool called a graver, which you  can think of as a miniature chisel. The sharp, chisel ends of gravers are formed into different shapes that offer different looks for the text or graphics. Multiple shapes let engravers choose the best tool for the type of engraving you request.

Morrison Smith Jewelers is pleased to have a hand engraver with a vast amount of experience as well as a very unique talent. John Flitton, originally from, has been with Morrison Smith since 1993. During his thirty-four year hand engraving career, John has markedchampionship cups, humidor boxes for the Masters and a silver jewelry casket for Margaret Thatcher. He also designed a silver coffee cup for the Queen of England as well as a commemorative box for the late Princess Diana. After Charles Smith interviewed John in 1989, he recognized the caliber of his work and wanted him to work for Morrison Smith Jewelers. It took four years and mounds of paperwork to get John and his family to the. His work here has included engraving flatware, holloware and giftware, including family crests. John has also designed and engraved on one-of-a-kind pieces as well as all gold, silver and platinum jewelry.  See some examples below, including a silver box with the grandchildren's signatures as well as custom engraving around a wedding band.

John has developed a Heraldry design, titled Heraldry Today, that can be personalized in many different ways at an affordable price. To find out more about Heraldry and see examples of engraving, please click here.

Machine Engraving

Machine engraving is accomplished with different types of power-driven engravers that work off of templates or computer-aided designs. The jewelry or gift item is inserted in the machine and when turned on, the machine forms the letters or graphics. Machine engravers burrow into or spread the metal apart. It is important to get a fairly deep impression for the engraving to last a long time.  See some examples below, including your wedding invitation engraved on a silver tray (can be engraved horizontally or vertically) or a baby cup engraved with the baby's name and birthdate.

Machine engraving is now available in our online store!  Please click here to see all available styles.
